Junior Samuel Kang and freshman Maria Elena Ubina both played atop their respective Princeton lineups this season, and both advanced to the quarterfinals at the CSA individual championships Friday at Drexel.

Ubina was one of seven Princeton members of the women's draw, though she is the only one who will enter Saturday's quarterfinal round. After a 3-1 win in the first round, she swept Penn No. 2 Yan Xin Tan 12-10, 11-5, 11-3 to reach the quarterfinal. She will play another Quaker next, as she takes on fellow freshman Anaka Alankamony for a spot in the semifinal. Alankamony won the regular season matchup between the two players, a 3-1 victory at Penn.

Both senior Libby Eyre and junior Nicole Bunyan advanced to the second round. Eyre, a three-time All-America honoree, topped Jenny Scherl 3-1 before falling to Harvard No. 2 Haley Mendez in three close games. Bunyan won his opener 3-0, but she fell to reigning finalist Kanzy El Defrawy in the second round.

Rachel Leizman, Alex Lunt, Hallie Dewey and Alex Sawin each lost in the first round, though Lunt advanced to the second round of the consolation draw.

Kang reached his first individual quarterfinal by winning a pair of 3-1 matches. He opened with a win over Mauricio Sedano, and he followed with a 9-11, 11-8, 11-1, 11-8 over Harvard No. 2 Brandon McLaughlin. After splitting a pair of matches against McLaughlin last year, Kang pulled away with three strong games to reach the quarterfinal round.

He will now play 2012 champion Ali Farag of Harvard, a two-year finalist and the top seed in the tournament. Kang played Farag in the second round last year and both took a game and pushed Farag deep in the fourth before falling 3-1.

Both junior Tyler Osborne and senior Dylan Ward reached the second round before falling to Top 6 opponents. Ward won his first A flight match against Trinity's Vrishab Kotian, and then fell 3-0 to Farag. Ward, who took 23 points off Farag and went 13-11 in the middle game, will look for his first All-America honor in the second round consolation draw.

Osborne, a two-time All-America, won his opener against Ahmed Hatata, and then fell in three close games to Rochester No. 1 Neil Cordell.
