Princeton's competitors on the first day of the Gopher Invitational men's tennis event in Minnesota picked up a pair of doubles wins against their counterparts from the host Gophers, but Minnesota's players swept the Tigers in singles.

"The good news is we were in 10-point match tiebeakers in seven of the nine singles matches we played," Princeton head coach Billy Pate said. "The bad news is we fell just short in all of them. It was very unusual and I can't say I remember a time when more close matches went against us in one day. Nonetheless we played great in doubles and clearly were in a position to win many of these singles. We simply need to consolidate our chances when getting a match point, serving out sets, and converting break points. Fortunately, we are right there and we have new opportunities to work on these areas. We look forward to a new day tomorrow and will expect to be more mentally tough."

The Tigers took two of three from the Gopher players in doubles, with Tom Colautti and Augie Bloom teaming up for one of the victories and Zack McCourt and Ben Quazzo combining for the other.

Complete results from Princeton's first day at the event are below. The Tigers will return Friday afternoon to meet players from Western Michigan in both doubles and singles before squaring off with players from DePaul Saturday and Denver Sunday.
