The Princeton men’s lightweight rowing team was both young and hungry throughout the 2012-13 season, and it added some significant experience during this postseason.

A varsity eight loaded with both freshmen and sophomores can take a lot from this postseason, which ended Sunday on Lake Natoma with a sixth-place finish at the IRA national championships. Princeton had six underclassmen in its top boat, and they now all understand the pressure that comes in both the Eastern Sprints and IRA grand finals.

Head coach Marty Crotty is now hopeful that they can build upon that foundation into an even faster group next season.

Harvard was the class of the league this season, and it went wire-to-wire to win the national championship in 5:54.22. Yale, Columbia and Dartmouth put on a terrific battle for the other two spots on the podium; the Bulldogs held off both in 5:55.24, while Columbia took bronze in 5:55.74.

Princeton did make a late run at Cornell with hopes of getting into the top five, but the deficit was just too much. Despite topping the Big Red by more than 1.5 seconds in the final 500 meters, Princeton ended sixth in 6:00.43.

The Tiger lightweights gained experience in other areas too, as four freshmen were part of the heavyweight eight that reached the petite final, while four other returners reached the lightweight four grand final and finished fourth.
