PHILADELPHIA (5/3/13) – Turnovers proved costly in overtime as Princeton committed three while Dartmouth’s Hana Bowers scored the golden goal as Dartmouth defeats Princeton 11-10 in double overtime in the semifinals of the Ivy League Tournament on Friday, May 3 at Franklin Field.

It was a back-and-forth affair with seven lead changes and seven ties.

Dartmouth (10-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with back-to-back goals by Liz Calby and a tally from Jaclyn Leto. Princeton (10-6) responded with three straight getting goals from senior Jaci Gassaway, junior Mary-Kate Sivilli and freshman Alexandra Bruno.

The teams traded goals within eight seconds to make it 4-4 midway through the first half.

Dartmouth scored twice to regain the lead but the Tigers closed out the half on a three-goal run as Princeton grabbed its first lead of the game 7-6.

The Big Green scored twice in the first three minutes of the second half to take back the lead 8-7.

Sophomore Erin McMunn tied it with a free-position goal five minutes later and sophomore Erin Slifer scored her second of the afternoon at 13:23 to give Princeton the 9-8 edge.

Bowers knotted it back up at 8:48. The teams traded goals within one minute of each other as the teams closed out the final five minutes in a 10-10 tie. Dartmouth held the ball for the final three minutes of the game not making a move offensively.

Junior Sarah Lloyd won the opening draw in overtime but after two minutes the Tigers overthrew a pass and turned the ball over. Time ran out before Dartmouth would clear midfield. Lloyd again won the next draw and Princeton called a timeout. The Tigers passed the ball around before Slifer went to goal but her shot with eight seconds left rang off the pipe setting up a second overtime.

Slifer won the next draw but had a costly turnover 30 seconds later. Junior Colleen Smith forced Bowers into a charge giving Princeton possession but an errant throw to clear the ball resulted in another Princeton turnover with 1:36 on the clock. Bowers received a free-position attempt with 1:22 and she converted it for the game winner.

Slifer was the leading scorer for the Tigers with two goals and three assists. Bruno had three goals and one assist. Gassaway tallied three points while McMunn had two. Junior goalie Caroline Franke was one save away from her career high, making 12 in the game as Dartmouth outshot Princeton 29-20.

Dartmouth had a 15-10 edge in draw controls, while Princeton won three more ground balls, 13-10.

Bowers had a six-point effort for the Big Green scoring five goals and assisting on one. Calby and Leto had two points apiece. Kristin Giovanniello made six saves in goal.

Dartmouth will face the winner of Penn/Cornell in the Ivy League Championship.

Princeton will learn its NCAA fate on Sunday, May 5 when the selection show is held at 9 p.m., on NCAA.com
