@PUSoftball Sees Win Streak Snapped in Extras

Hampton got past the Princeton softball team 5-4 in eight innings Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, bringing the Tigers' five-game win streak to an end.

Princeton fell to 8-4 on the season with the loss, while Hampton improved to 12-18.

Princeton got on the board early, with Candy Button homering for the third straight game and getting a three-run shot to put the Tigers up 3-0 in the bottom of the first. But after holding Hampton hitless for three innings, Princeton pitcher Alex Peyton ran into trouble in the fourth, giving up four hits that led to three runs and a relinquishing of the lead.

The 3-3 tie stayed right through the end, though Princeton was a hit away from winning it in the last of the seventh. The Tigers had a hit apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and got two in the seventh, but left runners at second and third.

The international tiebreaker rule came into play for the eighth, and Hampton picked up that runner on a double and another on back-to-back groundouts to pull ahead 5-3. Princeton got one back in the bottom of the eighth on an Emily Viggers double, but that was it.

Viggers finished 3 for 4 on the day while Lizzy Pierce picked up two hits as the Tigers outhit the Pirates 9-6. Peyton fell to 2-3 with the loss, going all eight innings while giving up six hits and walking three, earning four of the five runs. The Tigers left eight runners on base as Hampton pitcher Jailynn Jackson (9-7) struck out nine Princeton batters.

Princeton began its game against UMBC but saw the contest suspended due to darkness after three innings with the score tied 1-1. Meredith Brown was in the circle for the Tigers, allowing two hits without a walk in three innings, striking out four. Button, Peyton, Viggers and Tory Roberts split Princeton's four hits over the three frames.

The Tigers will resume the game at 11 a.m. Sunday at UMBC, then head over to Coppin State for a 2:45 p.m. game.
