Softball Sweeps Two From Delaware State Saturday in Florida

Rookie Shanna Christian picked up two wins over Delaware State Saturady at the North Florida Osprey Invitational in Jacksonville, advancing Princeton to Sunday's tournament championship game against North Florida at 12:30 p.m.

Princeton took the first game 8-3 with Christian tossing 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief. In the 3-0 win in the afternoon game, Christian gave up her only hit in the first inning to the game's opening batter. She walked six in her 9 1/3 total innings on the day, striking out seven.

In the opener, Princeton (3-1) fell behind early in Meredith Brown's first start of the season in the circle but rallied to take a 2-1 lead on an Emily Viggers RBI single in the third.

Princeton fell behind 3-2 two innings later, leading to Brown being replaced with two outs by rookie Christian, making her collegiate debut, got the last out of the inning, and Princeton scored the game's last six runs. Skye Jerpbak hit a 3-run home run in the seventh as part of a five-run inning that gave Princeton a cushion, and Christian picked up her first win as a Tiger.

In the second game, Princeton pulled ahead in the second inning when Candy Button had an RBI double, and the Tigers added some insurance in an eight-batter inning that saw just one hit, from Lizzy Pierce, two walks and two errors.

Alyssa Schmidt went 6 for 8 on the twinbill and now leads the team in hits, going 9 for 16 (.563). Delaware State fell to 1-6 with the losses.

North Florida will enter Sunday's game at 18-4 overall and winners of 10 in a row, including a 2-0 win over Princeton in which the Tigers outhit the Ospreys 8-7.

Postgame notes

• All six freshmen have made their collegiate debuts over the first two days, and all six have gotten starts.

• Princeton has outscored its opponents 21-7 over the three games so far.

• Princeton's pitching staff has a 1.61 ERA through its first four games.

• Four players have hit home runs, each with one so far. Seniors Lizzy Pierce and Alex Peyton have put one out, as have sophomore Sarah McGowan and freshman Skye Jerpbak.

• Princeton has won at least three of its first four games for the first time since 2009, when it was also 3-1.
