The Princeton women's swimming and diving made a strong first step on its 2013-14 journey, claiming multiple wins and Top-5 finishes from members of all four of its classes during an impressive showing during the season-opening Princeton Open this weekend at DeNunzio Pool.
Princeton opened the day with a dominant performance in the 200 medley relay, as the quartet of Boyce, Olivia Chan, Nikki Larson and Morgan Karetnick won the event in 1:44.27, more than four seconds faster than any team in the field. The Tiger ‘B’ team of Sada Stewart, Emily Yu, Beverly Nguyen and Katie Diller followed with a second-place finish in 1:48.78.
Boyce and Larson went 1-2 in the 100 fly, with Boyce taking the win in 54.78. Larson placed second in 55.29, while classmate Nguyen took fourth in 56.86.
Junior Damaris Iriondo, who missed the second half of the 2013 Ivy League championship season, picked up her first win of the year when he took the 200 free in 1:53.53. Remick placed fourth in 1:55.69, while Diller added a fourth-place finish in 1:55.78.
Chan won the 100 breast in an exciting head-to-head duel with Fordham’s Kelly Carroll. Chan, who has handled the breast leg in both winning relays this weekend, won in 1:05.61, only .03 of a second ahead of Carroll. Classmate Melissa Fulenwider added a third-place finish in 1:07.10.
Boyce, the three-time reigning Ivy League champion in the 100 back, won that event in 55.57, more than 2.5 seconds faster than the rest of the field. The duo of Nguyen (58.10) and Mulligan (59.17) made it a 1-2-3 finish for Princeton.
The quartet of Larson, Stewart, McDonald and Iriondo wrapped up the second session by winning the 800 free relay in 7:40.93.
Iriondo opened the afternoon session with a victory in the mile, topping freshman teammate Rebecca Fleming by less than one second in a dramatic win. Iriondo claimed the win in 17:14.30, while Fleming took second in 17:15.09. Lepesant took third in 17:25.81.
Boyce completed a sweep of the back events with a win in the 200 in 2:05.87, while Nguyen finished second in 2:06.50. Junior Shirley Wang followed closely in third in 2:06.70.
Larson reversed the result of the 100 fly, topping Boyce for the win in 50.72. Boyce took second in 51.87. Chan picked up her second win of the weekend, sweeping the breast events with a win in the 200 in 2:21.85. Nguyen placed second in 2:26.01, while Yu placed third in 2:26.49.
Karetnick wrapped up the individual events with a third-place finish in the 200 fly (2:05.53), while the quartet of Boyce, McDonald, Remick and Fulenwider won the 400 free relay in 3:32.08.
Freshman Caitlin Chambers had a perfect opening weekend, sweeping both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. She scored a 303.70 to win the 1-meter, while classmate Lisa Lee took second with 288.10.
Chambers added a win on the 3-meter board with 266.95 points, while senior Randi Brown finished second with 249.95 points.
Princeton, the reigning Ivy League champion, will open the Ivy regular season this weekend when it heads to Ithaca for a tri-meet with both Cornell and Penn.
