HANOVER, N.H. (3/1/13) - The Princeton men's hockey team was
less than four minutes away from a win when Dartmouth's Jesse Beamish spoiled
the victory and scored the game-tying goal to force overtime. The game finished
in an exciting, no-holds-barred 2-2 tie.
With a 7-10-3 ECAC record, Princeton remains in a tie for
ninth place, along with Brown. The Tigers are 9-14-4 overall.
Beamish scored at 16:23 on a wrap around after Eric Neiley
tried to pop the puck in on netminder Mike Condon on the left side. Condon was
down on his stomach and tried to get over to cover the left side but Neiley
beat him to it.
Dartmouth's Mike Keenan scored the game's first goal at
15:08. Brett Patterson got the puck at the extended red and sent it up the ice
to Keenan at the left point. Keenan fired the puck through traffic and into the
back of the net.
It was a short-lived lead as senior Will MacDonald scored
2:06 later to knot the game at 1-1. MacDonald scored right off a faceoff with
freshman Michael Zajac drawing the puck back to MacDonald who ripped a shot
from the high slot.
Junior Andrew Ammon gave Princeton the lead midway though
the second period. Freshman Kyle Rankin found Ammon between the circles and
Ammon rifled a high shot over the outstretched glove of netminder Charles
Grant.
The Big Green tried to end the game in regulation when Taylor
Boldt got a breakaway, but he was denied by Condon on a toe save with 40
seconds left in the third.
Dartmouth's best chance of the extra period was a shot by
Tyler Sikura but Condon made the stop with two minutes left. Grant was
challenged on the other end, as Princeton had a 4-2 edge in shots in overtime.
Matt Farris ripped a shot from the left
point that Grant took in the chest and hung onto with 1:11 remaining. He made
his biggest and best stop of the game with 31.8 seconds left with a glove save
on a blast from senior Michael Sdao from the point.
Condon finished the game with 30 saves and Grant made 40, as
Princeton outshot Dartmouth 42-32.
Dartmouth will have home ice in the playoffs as it improves
to 13-10-4 overall and 9-8-3 in the league to sit in a three-way tie for third
place.
Princeton travels to Harvard for a 7 p.m., game tomorrow night. Harvard defeated No. 1 Quinnipiac 3-2 in overtime tonight.
