Release: 04/21/2012

The sixth-ranked Princeton men's lightweight crew retained the Wood-Hammond Trophy for the sixth straight season during a morning split on Bud Smith Memorial Race Course on Lake Carnegie. It was a strong day overall for the Tigers, who won four of five races in ideal and fast conditions.

While Princeton left the morning with a trophy, it was the third-ranked Georgetown lightweights that nearly left with a course record. The Hoyas improved to 2-0 against Princeton this season by posting a winning time of 5:38.7; that time was just .28 seconds off of the 1998 Tigers' course-record setting performance.

Princeton took second in the race in 5:41.2, while the 10th-ranked Quakers placed third in 5:49.9. Princeton has won 33 of the last 34 Wood-Hammond Trophy races and holds an all-time series lead of 57-12.

The rest of the morning went as planned for the Tigers, who were competing in their final home regatta. The second varsity topped Georgetown by 4.6 seconds with a winning time of 5:52.4, while the varsity four won by 2.8 seconds in 7:05.0.

The freshman eight remained the lone perfect crew in the program (6-0) by topping Georgetown by 6.7 seconds with a time of 5:55.8. The second freshman eight was also impressive, defeating the Penn 3V in a time of 6:08.5.

Princeton has one more race this regular season, but it's as big as it gets for the lightweights. The Tigers will head to the Housatonic River in Connecticut to take on the top-ranked Harvard Crimson and the second-ranked Yale Bulldogs for The Goldthwait and Vogel Cups. The regatta will feature each of the last three EARC and IRA national champions; Princeton swept both titles in 2009 and 2010, while Harvard (EARC) and Yale (IRA) split the two crowns last year.
