NEW YORK -- The Princeton and Columbia softball teams played a pair of one-run games Friday, each team taking one on the northern tip of Manhattan.

The Lions and Tigers will get together again for a pair Saturday at 12:30 as the Ivy League season continues.

With the split, Princeton (13-26, 7-7) stands three games behind both Penn and Cornell in the Ivy South division with six to play. The Quakers swept the Big Red in their twinbill in Philadelphia Friday. Columbia (11-28, 5-9) is five games back.

Game 1: Columbia 2, Princeton 1

Princeton's Alex Peyton and Columbia's Brooke Darling each threw a complete-game three-hitter, but Darling's team pulled out a 2-1 win with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Tigers hadn't trailed until the game's end, taking a 1-0 lead using a Nicole Ontiveros walk, a Kelsey VandeBergh single and an error on the play to score Ontiveros. Peyton stranded two in the bottom of the first to preserve the lead, and the next three innings went by without a run.

Columbia tied it in the fifth, using an error, a stolen base and an RBI-single by Jennifer Bergeron to make it 1-1. The Tigers left Ontiveros on third base in the top of the sixth and went down in order in the seventh before Columbia's decisive at-bat.

The Lions started the seventh with two singles and a groundout to move the winning run to third base. A successful squeeze play ended it, picking up Emily Snodgrass's leadoff single.

Peyton fell to 5-11 with the loss, while Darling improved to 8-13.

Game 2: Princeton 3, Columbia 2

The second game played out much like the first on the scoreboard, but this time Princeton had the decisive seventh inning run to win 3-2.

Again, Princeton took a first-inning lead, this time plating two runs on a two-RBI single from Maddie Cousens that picked up singles by the pair of seniors, Nicole Ontiveros and Kelsey VandeBergh.

Liza Kuhn (6-10) retired the first eight batters she faced, getting through the first three innings scoreless. An error, a stolen base and an RBI-single from Alix Cook pulled the Lions within 2-1, and that's where it stayed until the sixth.

Columbia staged a two-out rally in the sixth, using a Morgan Cook single, a wild pitch and a Liz Caggiano single to make it 2-2 before Kuhn ended the inning.

Princeton answered with its own two-out rally in the seventh, using two straight errors and an RBI-single by Sarah McGowan to take a 3-2 lead and pick up Alex Peyton.

Kuhn sealed the win in the seventh, starting the inning by allowing two singles before getting a groundout and striking out two batters to end the threat.

Kalli Schultea started the game for Columbia and left during the fifth when Princeton had runners on second and third, giving way to Brooke Darling, who kept the game at 2-1 before surrendering the go-ahead run in the seventh to fall to 8-14 on the season.
