No. 9 Women’s Water Polo Opens League Play with Pair of Wins

The ninth-ranked Princeton women’s water polo team has not lost a league game in two years and was not about to start Saturday, as the Tigers topped Mercyhurst, 13-9, and Bucknell, 14-5, in Eerie, Pa.

Princeton (23-1, 2-0 Southern Division) remains on the road for a pair of games versus Brown and Harvard on Saturday, Mar. 5 in Lewisburg, Pa.

Senior Molly McBee led the way with five goals, two steals and an assist, while junior Jessie Holcheck followed with four goals and an assist.

Princeton and Mercyhurst played a close game over the first half, as the Tigers held a 7-5 advantage by halftime. The Orange and Black powered to a 4-1 run in the third to close out the game outscoring the Lakers 6-4 to earn the victory.

Goalie CeCe Coffey earned her third career win behind a save and an assist.

Katie Rigler and Holechek each had hat tricks, and Rigler, Holcheck and Ashley Hatcher recorded three steals apiece.

The Tigers extended their winning ways and win streak to eight straight, concluding the afternoon topping Bucknell.

Guided by McBee’s four-goal outing, Princeton capitalized quickly and scurried to a 6-2 lead over the first half.

The Tigers controlled the scoreboard from start to finish, closing out the game on an 8-4 run.

Ashleigh Johnson started in goal and recorded six goals and two steals, and CeCe Coffey closed out the final quarter-plus with four stops.

Dunstan had a team-high three assists and Hannah Lapkin made two goals.
