BURNABY, B.C. (1/3/14) – A four-point night for Andrew Calof earned him the Player of the Game as the Princeton men’s hockey team defeated Simon Fraser 8-1 in the first game of the Great Northwest Showcase.
The honor was presented during an on-ice presentation following the conclusion of the game at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre.
Linemates Mike Ambrosia had three points on one goal and two assists and Ryan Siiro had a goal and an assist. Senior Eric Carlson was also a multiple-point scorer with a goal and an assist. Seven other players had one point.
All three Princeton goalies saw action in the game. Delta, B.C., native Sean Bonar got the starting nod and made two saves in the first period. Sophomore Colton Phinney played the second period and about three minutes of the third, earning the win with four saves. Junior Ryan Benitez played his first game this season and made three saves in the final 17 minutes.
Despite outshooting Simon Fraser 13-3 in the first period, the teams entered the first intermission tied at 1-1. The game-winner was the lone goal of the second before the Tigers exploded with six goals in the third.
Calof from Ambrosia gave Princeton the 1-0 lead at 5:33 in the first. SFU capitalized on a miscue at 15:51 when Bonar tried to play the puck behind the cage, but it was picked up by Graham Smerek. Smerek found the team’s leading scorer Nick Sandor for an open net.
Siiro tallied the game-winning goal on the power play at 13:12 of the second period. Calof skated up the left side and sent a cross-ice pass to Ambrosia. Ambroisa centered for Siiro and he banged it in for the 2-1 lead as the Tigers capitalized on their third power-play opportunity of the game.
Williamson was called for boarding in the final seconds of the second period setting Princeton up to start with a man-advantage in the final frame.
The Tigers took advantage as Siiro set up Calof just 18 seconds in to the third, setting up a five-goal run in a span of just 6:10.
The fourth goal was Ben Foster from Garrett Skrbich at 1:43 followed by Kyle Rankin from Tucker Brockett at 2:56, Jack Berger from Carlson at 4:35 and Ambrosia from Calof at 6:28.
Carlson put the final touches on the game with a goal at 16:50 with senior Alec Rush and sophomore Michael Zajac assisting.
Andrew Parent made 28 saves in goal for Simon Frasier as Princeton outshot the Clan 36-10.
Princeton was 2 for 4 on the power play and 2 for 2 on the penalty kill.
Princeton will play University of British Columbia tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. UBC faces off with North Dakota tonight at 7 p.m.
