Tiger Volleyball Completes Ivy Weekend Sweep With 3-0 Win Over Cornell
Head coach Sabrina King believed in the promise of her young volleyball team heading into the weekend, and the Tigers rewarded that confidence with their best weekend of the Ivy League season. Princeton completed a sweep of its New York rivals with a 3-0 win over Cornell Saturday evening.
Freshman Cara Mattaliano was the Ivy League Rookie of the Week the last time Princeton played both Cornell and Columbia, and she'll be a top candidate for the honor again this weekend. After a brilliant effort Friday night against Columbia, the freshman outside recorded a team-best 19 kills and added six digs in the victory.
The Princeton offense was highly efficient against Cornell, recording 47 kills with only 14 errors and hit .355 in the three-set win. Sophomore Kendall Peterkin had 12 kills and hit .579, while junior middle Nicole Kincade had eight kills, three blocks and hit .500 during the match.
Princeton held off Cornell in a tough first set, claiming it with a kill from Kincade and an attack error for the 27-25 win. Princeton held a two-point edge at 23-21 in the second and finished it with a service error and a service ace from freshman Lauren Miller, who paced the offense with 42 assists. The Tigers carried that momentum through the third set for a 25-13 win.
Princeton will look to build on its two-match win streak when it heads north next weekend for matchups with both Harvard and Dartmouth.
