BURNABY, B.C (1/4/14) - A goal by Nate Fleming at 5:03 of the second period was the difference maker as the University of British Columbia defeated Princeton men's hockey 1-0 in the title game of the Great Northwest Showcase.

It was a tight battle throughout with shots falling 29-24 in favor of the Tigers. Senior netminder Sean Bonar made 23 saves in front of his native crowd.

Fleming's goal was an unassisted goal as he stripped a Princeton player at the opposing blue line in front of the UBC bench. He skated unimpeded to goal and scored the game's only goal.

UBC came out the gates and fired nine shots on net to Princeton's one. The Tigers slowly started to settle in and took three straight shots on goal during a 4x4 and made up more ground during its first power-play opportunity, to make shots even at 12-12 near the close of the scoreles first period.

Steve Stanford played in net for one period and made 12 stops. Matt Hewitt played the final 40 minutes and made 17 saves.

Hewitt was impressive off the bat with a big stop on a shot by sophomore Mike Ambrosia. Hewitt had come out to make a save on freshman Ryan Siiro but the puck bounced to Ambrosia and Hewitt hustled back to the right save to make the stop.

The Tigers had the better scoring chances in the game including a shot by Ambrosia off a quick draw, a Jack Berger shot as the net came off its moorings and a Siiro interception and quick fire.

With 1:38 to play Princeton called a timeout and pulled Bonar for the extra skater. A draw deep in the Princeton zone forced Bonar back to the net and he made a great stop off of the ensuing face off. The Tigers took possession and added the extra skater again but couldn't score.

Princeton's penalty kill was impressive throughout the game as the Tigers killed off 10 minutes with authority.

The Tigers resume NCAA action when they host Rensselaer and Union at home, Jan. 10 & 11.
