No. 7 Yale Tops Princeton 3-2 at Liberty Hockey Invitational
NEWARK, N.J. (10/26/13) - No. 7 Yale took an early lead and Princeton couldn't come back from the deficit as the Bulldogs won the final game of the Liberty Hockey Invitational, 3-2.
The Bulldogs grabbed a 2-0 lead seven minutes into the game before a power-play goal by the Tigers made it a one-goal game at the close of the first period. Yale regained the two-goal lead with a short-handed goal in the second period before Princeton scored an extra-attacker goal in the second minute.
Yale got on the board in the third minute on a Matthew Beattie goal. Mitch Witek dumped the puck in and Beattie collected at the opposite blue line, and fired from inside the left circle glove side on netminder Sean Bonar.
Four minutes later, Nicholas Weberg scored his first of two on a tip in on a Trent Ruffalo shot. Carson Cooper started the play as he intercepted the puck at the blue line and found Ruffalo in the high slot.
Princeton got on the board with a power-play goal at 14:42. Junior Aaron Ave got the puck back off a face off and pushed the puck ahead to Tyler Maugeri, who fed Ben Foster on the left extended red. Foster faked a wrap and pushed the puck back to Maugeri for his first goal of the season.
The Bulldogs regained a two-goal lead with a short-handed goal at 9:59 of the second period. Stu Wilson flipped the puck down the ice and beat his man to the puck with a check in the right corner. Wilson found Weberg on the doorstep and he tapped it in on the left side to make it 3-1.
Princeton had one last say with an extra attacker goal with eight seconds left in regulation. Senior Alec Rush wound up for a shot at the point and it blasted off the pad of Patrick Spano to senior Andrew Calof on the doorstep. Calof tapped it off to Andrew Ammon at the left post and Ammon put it away for his first goal of the season.
Bonar made 27 saves for the Tigers, while Spano stopped 22 shots in his first career win.
Princeton, now 1-1, will travel to Central New York next weekend to face Cornell and Colgate.
