PRINCETON, N.J. (3/23/13) – It was a total team effort, as the Princeton women’s lacrosse team upset No. 12 Johns Hopkins on Saturday, March 23 at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.

The Tigers went on a 6-0 run in the second half right after Hopkins had taken its largest lead of the game, at 7-4. The Princeton offense was clicking and the defense held the Bluejays to just six shots and forced them into six turnovers in the second half.

Seven different players scored with senior Jaci Gassaway leading the charge with a hat trick. Sophomore Erin McMunn and junior Mary-Kate Sivilli both had three-point games with a goal and two assists each. Freshman Alexandra Bruno scored twice and junior Sarah Lloyd had a goal and an assist.

The teams traded goals in the first half with the BlueJays taken a 4-3 lead into the locker room. They added two more to start the second half before Princeton called a timeout.

Sivilli sent a pass from behind the goal to Gassaway on the doorstep as Princeton began its comeback and cut its deficit to two, 7-5 at 20:22. McMunn scored unassisted to make it a one-goal game and forcing Hopkins to call a timeout. The stoppage didn’t impede the Tigers as senior Sam Ellis set up Gassaway for her second goal to tie the game at 7-7 with 13 minutes to play.

Princeton grabbed its first lead of the day when Gassaway scored off a Lloyd pass at 9:30. Lloyd scored on the next possession to expand the lead to 9-7 with 6:36 remaining.

Lloyd was a force on the other end as well as she blocked a shot by Sarah Taylor, grabbed the ground ball and took it the other way with less than four minutes left.  With time winding down Hopkins started to come out and pressure the Tigers to try to force them into a turnover. Goalie Cosette Larash was also in on the pressure, leaving an open cage for freshman Anya Gersoff to toss in the final goal with help from Sivilli with 15 seconds left on the clock.

Putting McMunn in to take the draws in the second half was significant as the Tigers won nine of 11 with McMunn herself capturing four. Princeton finished the game with 12 draws to Hopkins’ seven. Shots fell in Princeton’s favor 28-20 while both teams caused nine turnovers.

Junior Caroline Franke made five saves in her third win of the season.

Dene DiMartino had a hat trick to pace the Hopkins offense, while Sarah Taylor scored twice. Leading scorer Taylor D’Amore was held to just one goal thanks to the stifling Princeton defense. Larash made 11 saves as her team falls to 6-3.

Princeton is now 4-0 at home and 4-3 overall. The Tigers entertain Columbia on Wednesday, March 27 at 7 p.m.
