Courtesy: Princeton Athletic CommunicationsCAMBRIDGE, Mass. (4/14/12) - Harvard held No. 18 Princeton to one goal in the second half as the Crimson stunned the Tigers in women's lacrosse 10-7 on Saturday, April 14 at Harvard Stadium.
The score was knotted at 6-6 at halftime, but Harvard won the second half, 4-1 and held possession of the ball for the final 7:06 for the win.
With Dartmouth's win over Penn earlier in the day coupled with this game's result, Dartmouth is in first place in the league at 5-0, followed by Penn in second at 4-1. Princeton, Cornell and Harvard are all tied for third with 3-2 records; and only two will earn a place in the Ivy League Tournament.
Harvard started the game on a 3-0 streak, getting goals for three different scorers.
Senior Cassie Pyle put the Tigers on the board at 20:18 with her 30th goal of the year and her 100th career goal.
Danielle Tetreault net her second of the game at 17:05, to give the Crimson a 4-1 edge.
Pyle converted on an eight-meter attempt and her teammates followed up with the next two goals. Freshman Erin McMunn scored on a pass from junior Jaci Gassaway and freshman Erin Slifer put away the tying goal at 10:43.
The Crimson would get two goals within 24 seconds to regain the lead once again but Pyle proved to be the catalyst once again, scoring on a free-position attempt. McMunn followed up to knot the game at 6-6 at the end of the first half.
Kyleigh Keating scored the first goal of the second half, and senior Barb Previ evened the scoring with help from Gassaway at 21:57.
Less than two minutes later however, Melanie Baskind would score to give Harvard the lead for good. Tetreault notched goals at 15:51 and 9:58 for the 10-7 score.
Tetreault finished the game with four goals and Keating had two goals and two assists. Jennifer VanderMeulen added two goals. Kelly Weis made five stops in goal.
Pyle paced the Tigers with a hat trick while McMunn scored twice. Gassaway added two helpers. Freshman Annie Woehling made eight saves including stopping both of Harvard's free-position attempts.
Harvard outshot Princeton 22-15 and had 14 ground balls to Princeton's nine. The Tigers won the battle in the center circle, 10-9.
Princeton looks to secure its bid to the Ivy League Tournament when it hosts Dartmouth next Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m., at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
