Courtesy: Princeton Athletic CommunicationsPRINCETON, N.J. (4/11/12) - A late first-half run by Maryland gave the Princeton women's lacrosse team a deficit it couldn't recover from, as the Terrapins posted a 15-9 win on Wednesday, April 11 at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Princeton took a 3-1 lead to start the game, but Maryland went on 10-goal run to take an 11-3 lead. The Tigers battled back and had a 5-1 run in the second half but couldn't get close enough.
Kristy Black put up the game's first goal on an assist from Alex Aust at 27:34, in what would be Aust's first of six assists as she had a 10-point game to lead the Terps.
Princeton rattled off three straight. Freshman Erin Slifer was awarded a free-position after junior Charlotte Davis picked up her own rebound and passed off to Slifer. Her defender was called for shooting space and the rookie delivered on the eight-meter to tie the game 1-1 at 25:03. Junior Jaci Gassaway gave the Tigers the lead when she came around the back of the cage and fired on a pass from Davis at 24:37. Senior Cassie Pyle fed sophomore Sarah Lloyd for a goal four minutes later as Princeton took the 3-1 lead.
Maryland's run began when it started winning draw controls. Up to the 3-1 score Princeton had won three of the four. The Terps won the next five draw controls and scored seven goals in the last 14:20 of the first half to take an 8-3 lead.
Out of the locker room Maryland continued its attack, tallying three more goals.
Gassaway broke up the run when she went one-on-one with goalie Brittney Dipper after a great outlet pass from senior Barb Previ and Gassaway beat the keeper on a high shot at 23:13.
Maryland responded with two straight goals in 26 seconds to make it 13-4 with about 20 minutes to play.
Princeton started to make its comeback as Pyle scored an unassisted goal at 16:49. Previ converted on a free-position attempt and Slifer let loose a rocket after a feed from Gassaway behind the goal, to make it 13-7 with 10 minutes left.
Maryland would dampen the Tigers' run with a goal right off the next draw.
Gassaway delivered a goal from the right side on a pass inside the fan from junior Sam Ellis and Pyle won a loose ball battle after a rebound by Slifer popped onto the turf. Pyle took the ball to the right and buried it past Dipper with 4:40 remaining.
Maryland would score the final goal of the game less than two minutes later to set the score 15-9.
Alex Aust had a 10-point game with four goals and six assists. Brooke Griffin had one goal and three assists, Katie Schwarzman had three goals and one assists and Kelly McPartland had three goals. Dipper finished the game with 11 saves.
Gassaway tallied three goals and one helper for four points. Pyle had two goals and an assist. Previ had a goal and an assist each and Slifer put up two goal. Freshman goalie Annie Woehling made eight saves.
Maryland outshot Princeton 30-27 and won the ground ball battle 17-11. The Terps won one more draw than the Tigers, 13-12.
Princeton returns to Ivy action on Saturday, April 14 when it travels to Harvard for a 1 p.m., game.
