Women's Hockey Hands Out Year-End Awards and Honors Seniors

PRINCETON, N.J. (4/28/13) - The Princeton women's hockey team held its annual team banquet Saturday night at the Nassau Inn in Princeton. The team handed out its five yearly awards and honored its senior class of Rose Alleva, Sally Butler, Gabie Figueroa, Katie Jones, Denna Laing and Olivia Mucha.

Co-captain Denna Laing took home two awards, the Elizabeth English Trophy and was co-recipient of the team's Patty Kazmaier Award. The English Trophy is presented annually to the member of the women's hockey team, voted by her teammates to be the most valuable player. It is named in honor of Elizabeth English '75, whose efforts helped to establish women's ice hockey at Princeton. Laing led the team in scoring and in goals with 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points. She led the ECAC in both short-handed goals and short-handed points and was named second-team All-Ivy League. Laing colelcted her first career hat trick this year, at Rensselaer, and had eight multiple-point games.

The Patty Kazmaier Award was shared between co-captains Laing and Figueroa. It is  given annually to the senior member of the women's hockey team who has made the greatest contribution to the program during her career and best exemplifies the following characteristics: Loyalty and devotion to Princeton Women's Hockey and determination and perseverance under adverse conditions.

Sharing the Kazmaier Award with Laing was co-captain Gabie Figueroa who also earned a share of the Preseason Athlete Award. A defender Figueroa finished the season with 13 points on 12 assists and one goal.

The Unsung Hero Award was presented to Rose Alleva. The award is given annually to the member of the women's hockey team voted by her teammates to be the team's unsung hero during the season. Alleva was the team's leading defensive scorer. In 29 games she has six goals and 10 assists for 16 points. She collected five multiple-point games. Alleva was named the ECAC Player of the Week on Nov. 4 and earned second-team All-Ivy League honors.

The Rookie of the Year Award was presented to Cassidy Tucker. Tucker skated in 26 games and led the freshmen in scoring with seven goals and six assists for 13 points. She was second in the ECAC in short-handed points and short-handed goals.

The Preseason Athlete Award was shared between Alleva, Figueroa and freshman Hilary Lloyd. The award is given to the player(s) who is committed to off-season preparation and conditioning. Lloyd played in all 31 games and finished the season with 11 points on three goals and eight assists. She stepped up right away scoring the game-winning goal in the season opener at Dartmouth.

Captains for the 2014-15 season were also announced. Guiding the team will be juniors Brianna Leahy and Ali Pankowski.
