HANOVER, N.H. (3/2/14) – The Princeton men's track & field team keeps a 21-year tradition alive with its second-place finish at the 2014 Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Championship. The program, led by head coach Fred Samara, has finished either first or second every year for the last 21 years.

Princeton held the lead through nine events, but after the 60 Cornell took an 85-83 lead. A 22-point high jump pushed the title out of Princeton’s reach, 145-107 with just the 4x400 remaining. Although the Tigers won the relay and Cornell was disqualified, the final score stood Cornell 145, Princeton 117.

Senior Damon McLean won his fourth straight triple jump, becoming just the second athlete in Heps history to sweep the event. The only other athlete to do so was James Leonard from 1972-75. McLean won the event with a jump of 15.53 (50-11.50) on his third attempt. Junior Nana Owusu-Nyantekyi was fourth at 15.09 (49-6.25).

Senior Tom Hopkins won his second Heps title with a victory in the 500 after winning the long jump yesterday. Hopkins won the 500 with a time of 1:03.55. Freshman Ray Mennin was sixth to garner an additional point with a time of 1:05.26.

Getting the day started was senior Michael Williams in the mile. Williams was third in the mile with a time of 4:02.26.

Freshman William Paulson was third in a tightly-contested 1,000 at 2:26.39. The top five finishers in the race were separated by just 1.59.

In the 800, junior Bradley Paternostro was fifth at 1:52.84.

In the long distance race of the day, Princeton got five points from senior Chris Bendtsen and junior Matt McDonald. Bendtsen finished fourth at 14:18.14 while McDonald was sixth at 14:27.15.

In the short sprint, sophomore John Hill clocked a 6.97 to take fourth in the 60-meter dash. Classmate Greg Caldwell was third in the 60 hurdles at 8.22. A fall by junior Rob Mohr, who was the runner-up last year, leveled him into seventh.

The distance medley relay and the 4x800 both finished sixth in two of the final three events of the day. Sophomore Luke Brahm, freshman Bryant Switzer, Paulson and Williams ran 9:58.25 in the DMR. The 4x800 comprised of sophomore David Pugiese, junior Sam Pons, sophomore Jamie Ferhnsrom and Paternostro posted a time of 7:42.12.

The 4x400 capped the meet with a win. Sophomore Jabari Johnson, senior Daniel McCord, Mennin and Hopkins ran 3:17.56. Cornell was DQ’ed in the race but the cushion wasn’t enough for the Tigers to take over first place.
