The fourth-ranked Princeton women’s squash team has seen three close matches go the other way this season, including Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the fifth-ranked Yale Bulldogs. The Tigers would love nothing more than to reverse those three outcomes in one week when they host the 2014 Howe Cup national team championships.

The day ended in a split for the Tigers, who swept seventh-ranked Stanford 9-0 to conclude a 2-1 home weekend.

The reigning Ivy League champion, Princeton couldn’t find the same magic it had last season when it went into New Haven and pulled out a 5-4 win. The Tigers did grab an early lead, as both juniors Nicole Bunyan (No. 3) and Hallie Dewey (No. 6) earned first-shift wins.

Bunyan avenaged a previous loss to Shihui Mao with three close victories in a 3-0 win. Dewey remained perfect on the season by closing out a 3-1 win at the No. 6 spot with back-to-back 13-11 victories.

Yale got one win during the shift, as Annie Ballaine claimed a 3-1 win over sophomore Tara Harrington at the No. 9 spot.

The Bulldogs evened the team score in the second shift, claiming 3-0 wins in the No. 2 and No. 5 spots. Both senior Libby Eyre and junior Alex Lunt pushed their opponents in close games, but neither could claim a win.

Freshman Alexandra Toth, playing the first high-pressure home match of her collegiate career, showed the kind of resolve that will make head Gail Ramsay feel confident over the next three years. She was pushed to a fifth game, but she took down Shiyuan Mao 11-8 in the fifth to even the team match entering the third shift.

Unlike the men’s match, which came down to the fifth game of the ninth match, Yale was able to take control early in the final shift. Former national champion Millie Tomlinson was too much for Maria Elena Ubina at the No. 1 spot, and Issey Norman-Ross earned a 3-0 win over sophomore Rachel Leizman at the No. 4 spot.

Princeton senior co-captain Alex Sawin rallied from an early hole in the finale to record a 3-1 win at the No. 7 spot.

Princeton followed with a perfect performance against Stanford.

Princeton will complete Ivy League play this weekend, starting Friday night in New York City against Columbia. The Tigers will return to Jadwin Sunday at noon to honor the Class of 2014 in a Senior Day match against Cornell.
