Newell Earns Invitation to Canadian National Development Team Camp
PRINCETON, N.J. (7/31/13) - Princeton goalie Kimberly Newell has earned an invitation to the Canadian National Women's Development Team selection camp, it was announced by Hockey Canada on Monday, July 28.
The camp will take place Aug. 10-18 at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.
Newell is one of four goalies that earned an invitation, and one of 40 total players attending the camp. The players will be split into two groups and will particiapte in several practices and intrasquad games, as well as off-ice dryland training, fitness testing and high performance classroom sessions.
At the end of the camp, Hockey Canada will choose 13 development team players to join the 27 senior team players in preparation for selection of Canada's team to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
Newell earned a gold medal with the Canadian U-18 team at the 2013 IIHF Women's World Championship this past winter. In her first year at Princeton, she earned a starting role and played in 26 games. With a 10-14-2 record, Newell recorded a .915 save percentage and a 2.90 goals against average making 768 total saves on 839 shots. Newell earned her first career win at RIT on Oct. 19 and made a career-high 47 saves against Ohio State on Nov. 23. She was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on Feb. 5 after a sweep of Yale and Brown.
