Kampersal Named Head Coach of U.S. Women's National U-18 Team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (4/21/13) - Princeton head women's hockey coach Jeff Kampersal has been named head coach of the U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team for the 2013-14 season it was announced by USA Hockey on Sunday, April 21.This is the second season Kampersal will be at the helm of the Under-18 team. Last year, Kampersal guided the team to a silver medal at the IIHF U18 Women's World Championship. The team finished the tournament with a 4-1 record and outscored its opponents 36-2. Kampersal's squad is the first team in tournament history to not allow a goal during preliminary play.
"It's always an honor to be associated with USA Hockey and serving as the head coach of the U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team," Kampersal said. "Along with the entire staff, I look forward to working closely with our players and achieving success."
Kampersal has been head coach at Princeton for 17 years and has been named the ECAC Coach of the Year three times (2002, 2006, 2009). In 14 of his 17 years he has taken the Tigers to the postseason. In 2006, the team won the Ivy League and reached the NCAA quarterfinals. He has had four players in contention for the Patty Kazmaier Award during his tenure, one earn All-America, three capture major Ivy League honors, two win ECAC major awards, seven first-team All-ECAC selections and 17 first-team All-Ivy picks.
A 1992 graduate of Princeton, Kampersal served as the men's hockey team's captain as a senior. An All-Ivy League and All-ECAC selection, Kampersal shares the school record for consecutive games played with 107. He was awarded the 1941 Championship Trophy, given to the Princeton player who best represents the winning spirit of the 1941 championship team. Kampersal played high school hockey at St. John's Prep in Danvers, Mass., and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in November of 2009.
A 10th-round selection of the New York Islanders in the 1988 NHL entry draft, Kampersal played for the ECHL's Richmond Renegades and the AHL's Capital District Islanders.
Kampersal will guide the Under-18 Team at the 2013 Women's Under-18 Series against Canada in Lake Placid, N.Y., from Aug. 21-25, and at the International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women's World Championship that is anticipated to take place in the Spring of 2014.
