PRINCETON, N.J. (2/15/12) - The Princeton women's hockey team will play its final games at Hobey Baker Rink this weekend, as the Tigers conclude the regular season hosting Rensselaer and Union on Feb. 17 & 18.
Seniors Danielle DiCesare, Ann-Marie Elvin, Julie Johnson, Heather Landry, Paula Romanchuk, Charissa Stadnyk and Rachel Weber will be honored prior to Union game at 4 p.m., on Saturday.
Princeton has secured a place in the ECAC Tournament with a 8-10-2 league record. The Tigers will be on the road for the quarterfinal series with their opponent and seed to be decided during this weekend's games. Princeton is 10-13-4 overall and is looking to get out of a three-game losing skid and primed for the playoffs. Sophomore Sally Butler leads the team with 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points. Classmate Denna Laing is second on the team in scoring with seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points. Freshman defender Ali Pankowski and senior Paula Romanchuk add 12 points apiece, with Romanchuk collecting a team-best 11 helpers. Senior netminder Rachel Weber has started in every game and has a .929 save percentage and a 2.13 goals against average.
Princeton has a 6-4-3 edge in the series with RPI that began in 2006. The Tigers are unbeaten in the last five games with a 2-0-3 mark. Earlier this year the teams played to a 1-1 tie on ECAC opening weekend. Seven of the 13 games in the series have been decided by one goal.
RPI is fighting for the final playoff spot, along with Brown, with 14 points on a 6-12-2 record in the ECAC. Overall the Engineers are 9-19-4 and are coming off of a 4-2 win over Dartmouth after a 4-2 loss to Harvard last weekend. Sophomore Jordan Smelker sits atop the scoring column with 26 points on 10 goals and a team-high 16 assists. Freshman Eleeza Cox has a team-high 13 goals and nine assists for 22 points. Seniors Alisa Harrison and Jill Vandergrift add 21 and 18 points, respectively. Freshman goalie tandem Kelly O'Brien and Brianna Piper have played a near even amount in net. O'Brien has started in 18 games and has an .874 save percentage and a 2.73 GAA. Piper has made 14 starts and has an .879 save percentage and a 2.92 GAA.
The Tigers are unbeaten in the series with Union, 16-0. The meetings have been much closer recently with Princeton nudging Union 1-0 in the ECAC Hockey opener on Dec. 2 at Messa Rink.
The Dutchwomen are playing in their final games of the season, as they did not make the ECAC playoffs. Union is 4-24-4 overall and 2-16-2 in league play. The team has hit a snag dropping its last six games, four of which were shutouts. The Dutchwomen are led offensively by freshmen Bryanne Panchuk and Christine Valente. Both have five goals and six assists for 11 points apiece. Senior defender Dania Simmonds has a team-high 10 helpers to sit third on the score sheet. Union has utilized three goaltenders this season with senior Kate Gallagher starting in 15 of 32 games. She has a .939 save percentage and a 2.10 GAA. Freshman Shena Lundberg has gotten 13 nods and has an .886 save percentage and a 3.77 GAA.
