A second half rally propelled the No. 12 Princeton women’s water polo team past Bucknell, 14-5, Sunday afternoon at DeNunzio Pool. The Tigers conclude the regular season with a perfect 5-0 record in Southern Division play and improve to 20-5.
The Bison took the upper hand in the first quarter, putting Princeton on its heels 4-1. The Tigers responded with a four uncontested goals to close out the second to knot things up 5-5 at halftime.
Princeton sustained its offensive push in the second half and the defense tightened up to prevent Bucknell from scoring again. The Tigers closed out the game riding a 9-0 run.
Freshman Ashleigh Johnson made nine saves, while Rachele Gyorffy, Camille Hooks and Molly McBee each had a pair of Princeton’s 11 steals.
Freshman Diana Murphy had four goals, including the tying score in the second quarter, and sophomore Ashley Hatcher tallied three. Gyorffy made a team-high three assists and Taylor Dunstan and Jessie Holechek each had two apiece.
The Tigers now head to the Southern Division Championship in Providence, R.I. from Apr. 13-14 as the top seed. They will face the fifth-seeded Bison at 10 a.m. and third-seeded George Washington at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the opening rounds.
