PRINCETON, N.J. – Five members of the Princeton University field hockey team are currently competing in the 2014 Women’s National Championship in Lancaster, Pa.

Under the watchful eye of the National Team High Performance Staff, 133 hand-selected athletes will look to make an impression while vying for a spot on the 2014-15 U.S. women’s national team roster.

Representing the Tigers are current Princeton student-athletes Cat Caro, Anya Gersoff, Allison Evans, Annabeth Donovan and Kate Ferrara. Held from June 16-21 at the Spooky Nook Sports Indoor Complex, the six-day tournament is broken down into two pools. Pool A consists of the U-21, White, Red and Blue teams, while Pool B includes the Patriots, Eagles, Freedom and Courage squads.

Gersoff, Caro and Donovan will compete as members of the U-21, while Evans will play for Team Freedom. Ferrara will participate as a part of USA Blue, while head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn will be on the sidelines as the coach of Team Courage.

This past season, Princeton posted a 14-5 overall record, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. An impact player in her first full year, Caro was twice named the Ivy League Player of the Week (10/29, 11/12), finishing fourth on the team and tied for ninth in the conference in points (22). Factoring into the scoring in nine games, she scored a goal in seven of her last eight outings.

Also piecing together an impressive first year, Donovan started 17 of the squad’s 19 contests as a back, ultimately earning Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Year accolades. A first-team all-conference pick, Donovan also garnered praise on the NFHCA all-region second team.

Earning the starting job in just her second season, Gersoff logged the majority of the Tigers’ minutes in net, posting a 10-4 record with .697 save percentage and 1.81 goals against average. A second-team All-Ivy honoree, Evans started all 19 of Princeton’s contests, tying for fifth in the league in points (28) and sixth in goals (11). Starting 10 games in the midfield, Ferrara helped the Tigers to a 10-3 mark in her 13 appearances.

Princeton’s representation at this week’s national championship comes on the heels of former Tigers Kathleen Sharkey, Katie Reinprecht and Julia Reinprecht helping Team USA to a fourth-place showing at the 2014 Rabobank World Cup in The Hague, Netherlands. Also joining the squad was former Princeton assistant coach Nathaniel Franks, who served as the team’s performance analyst.

Leading the Americans to a 4-0-1 mark during group play, Sharkey and Katie Reinprecht combined for five goals. Finishing the group stage with a +11 goal differential (17-6), Team USA sat atop Group B. Failing to advance with a semifinal penalty shootout loss to Australia, the national team closed out its World Cup run with a 2-1 setback against Argentina in the third-place match.
