The No. 8 Princeton women’s water polo team concluded the Aztec Invitational with a pair of victories Sunday. The Tigers opened with a 16-3 win over Cal Lutheran, before wrapping up the tournament with a 7-4 victory over host No. 19 San Diego State.
Led by a pair of Ashley Hatcher first quarter goals, Princeton jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Cal Lutheran. From there it was all Tigers, as they expanded their advantage to 9-0 by halftime.
Princeton’s clean sheet was broken up in the third quarter, but it was not enough to derail a cruising Tiger side.
Facing its third ranked team of the weekend, Princeton went down early 1-0 versus 19th-ranked San Diego State. The early deficit was countered by a pair of Jessie Holechek goals to send the teams into the break tied 2-2.
The Tigers picked up the pace in the third quarter and began to separate themselves from the Aztecs, outscoring SDSU 3-1 over the period and closing out the second half on a 5-2 run.
Holechek captained the offense with three goals, while Molly McBee added three steals.
Goalie Ashleigh Johnson was hammered early and made six of her 14 stops in the first quarter alone.
After going 3-1 at the invitational, Princeton improves to 17-1 on the year. The Tigers head next to Los Angeles for a four-game slate at the LMU Zumo Invite from Mar. 21-22.
