Saturday will bring the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Lafayette for the Princeton fencing teams, a major step on the way to qualifying up to the maximum 12 fencers for the NCAA Championships.

Princeton is in the Mid-Atlantic/South Region with Drew, Duke, Fairleigh Dickinson (women), Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Lafayette, NJIT, North Carolina, Penn, Penn State, Stevens Tech and Temple (women). The other five Ivies that compete in fencing are in the Northeast Region.

The Mid-Atlantic/South Region will be eligible for eight bids in men's epee, seven bids each in men's foil, men's saber, women's epee and women's saber, and six bids in women's foil toward the field of 24 in each weapon at the NCAA Championships.

Sixty percent of the selections will be based on performance at the regional, while 40 percent will be based on performance during the regular season. Selections will be announced Tuesday, March 11, with four days of competition at the NCAA Championships set to begin Thursday, March 20 at Ohio State. Princeton has qualified the maximum 12 fencers to the NCAAs in each of the last four years.

At last year's NCAA Regional, Princeton's women posted a sweep of the top spots, with epeeist Susannah Scanlan, foilist Ambika Singh and saberist Eliza Stone taking the top spots. Only Stone was a senior last year, but younger sister Gracie Stone took second in the saber a year go and is back this season. Singh is a two-time defending regional foil champion, having also won in 2012.

Fencing will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Lafayette's Kirby Sports Center.
