Stone, Abend Take Silver at Junior World Cup
Princeton fencers Gracie Stone and Audrey Abend won silver medals at their respective Junior World Cup events over the weekend.
Stone's came first, Saturday in Poland. Finishing just one spot off the top of a field of 119 fencers representing 14 nations across Europe and North America, Stone entered the 64-fencer draw and knocked off Italy's Sofia Ciaraglia 15-4 to advance out of that first round. Next came a win over Germany's Lisa Freudenberger, 15-11, followed by another 15-11 win over Russia's Tatiana Sukhova.
Once in the quarterfinals, Stone upended fellow American Sarah Merza 15-5, followed by a semifinal win over Mexico's Paola Pliego, 15-13. That set up a gold-medal bout aganist another fellow American, Sage Palmedo, and Stone came up just one touch short as Palmedo came away with the gold, 15-14.
Abend followed it up the next day in Slovakia, competing with 186 other fencers from 30 nations. She defeated six opponents, including fellow Tiger Anna Van Brummen 15-14 in the Round of 16. Abend posted victories of 15-7 in the quarterfinal over Italy's Sara De Alti and 15-8 in the semifinal over Austrian Paula Schmid. Only Italy's Alberta Santucci defeated Abend, 15-8 in the final.
The competitions come just one weekend before Princeton starts its season with two days of duals at Columbia and Penn Friday and Saturday.
