Heavyweights Break Six-Year Trend, Win Carnegie Cup On Housatonic
The home team was a perfect six-for-six in the Carnegie Cup since 2007. On Saturday morning, it was the sixth-ranked team that won the day. No. 6 Princeton defeated both Cornell and Yale to reclaim the Carnegie Cup for the first time since 2011."It was a solid day of racing for the entire squad, especially given the short week and the travel," head coach Greg Hughes said. "I was pleased with the way that our boats raced. We are making some decent progress and I am looking forward to the final regular season race of the spring this coming Saturday against Brown."
The win gives Princeton 37 Carnegie Cup victories, three more than No. 12 Cornell, though the Big Red made Princeton earn this one. Princeton won the varsity race and the Carnegie Cup in 5:28.27, while Cornell finished within four seconds. Seventh-ranked Yale finished three seconds back of Cornell.
"Today we were able to improve on our start to create an early advantage, a component to our race we were quite frankly lacking last weekend," sophomore Tim Masters said. "Our focus has - and will continue to be - on improving our boat speed internally as well as executing our best performance possible on race day, regardless of who we are racing."
Princeton also topped Cornell in both the second varsity and third varsity races. The Princeton 2V won in 5:34.20, 2.7 seconds faster than Cornell, while the 3V beat Cornell by four seconds in a time of 5:42.8.
Masters and his Princeton teammates know that the racing will only get tougher from here. Next Saturday, the Tigers will host No. 5 Brown, the reigning Eastern/Ivy League champion. Two weeks later, Princeton will compete for the league crown when the best boats in the East meet in Worcester, Mass.
"Whilst the result today was a step in the right direction," Masters said, "we still have a lot of work to do if we want to be in a position to medal at the EARC championships in May."
