WASHINGTON, D.C. (3/1/13) - The Princeton women's lacrosse
team couldn't overcome a five-goal deficit from the first half in an 11-6 loss
to No. 10/11 Georgetown on Friday, March 1.
Georgetown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first seven
minutes. Freshman Anya Gersoff scored
her third goal of the season to put Princeton on the scoreboard at 20:19.
Eight-meter opportunities helped Georgetown expand its lead
to 6-1 with less than 10 minutes to play in the half. Corinne Etchinson scored
an eight-meter while on the man-advantage, Erin Lovett passed on her
eight-meter attempt to Rosie Corcoran who scored, and Kelyn Freedman scored
from the arc as well.
Senior Charlotte Davis scored on a free-position for the
Tigers at 8:02 but Dina Jackson would answer with a free-position goal with
1:36 remaining to give the Hoyas a 7-2 lead at the intermission.
Princeton struggled to get back in the game, for every goal
it scored Georgetown answered in the second half. Goals were even in the second 4-4, as were shots at 12-12.
Corcoran tallied her second of the game to give the Hoyas
their largest lead of the game, 8-2.
Junior Erin Slifer tallied her first goal of the year at
23:25 but a minute later Freedman scored her second of the game. The teams
traded goals the rest of the game with Erin McMunn scoring twice and Sam Ellis
with a goal.
Barb Black made seven saves for the Hoyas who improve to 3-0
on the season.
Princeton's Annie Woehling stopped 11 shots including five on
free-positions attempts.
Freshman Liz Bannantine had a huge game defensively, causing
six turnovers and picking up four ground balls, both career-highs.
Both teams have 14 grounds balls apiece. Georgetown won 11 of 19 draw controls, but the Tigers had a 12-8 edge in turnovers caused.
Princeton returns home to host first-year program USC on
Sunday, March 3 at noon on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
