Susannah Scanlan was one of several high-finishing Princeton fencers at the North American Cup.

A handful of current and alumni Princeton fencers have competed through the first two days of the North American Cup event in Portland, Ore., and several Tigers have turned in strong performances.

Friday, freshman Sharon Gao competed in a field of 105 foilists and placed 52nd, going 3-3 in the pool portion of competition and 1-1 in the direct elimination while falling in the round of 64.

Saturday, Maya Lawrence '02 had the highest finish of any Princeton fencer yet, advancing to the direct elimination semifinal after competing through a field of 150 epeeists. Lawrence went 5-1 in pool play and battled through the bracket before falling to Notre Dame alumna Kelley Hurley in the semfinal.

Susannah Scanlan, freshman Katharine Holmes and Lindsay Campbell '02 all went 5-1 in pool play in the same epee bracket. Scanlan advanced to the quarterfinal, finishing fifth overall, while Holmes made it to the round of 16 before finishing 15th, and Campbell advanced to the round of 32 before finishing 18th. Junior Hannah Safford finished 80th, advancing to the round of 32 after a 3-2 pool portion.

The competition will run through Monday.
