Fencers Win Eight, Drop Four on First Day at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Princeton's fencing teams picked up eight wins and took on four defeats on the first day of the Northwestern weekend of duals.

The No. 4 ranked women's team lost both matches against fellow ranked opponents, 14-13 to No. 1 Notre Dame and 14-13 to No. 10 Ohio State, while defeating unranked Wayne State, Caltech, Stanford and North Carolina.

The sixth-ranked men picked up a win over 10th-ranked Stanford 17-10 but lost to top-ranked Notre Dame 20-7 and fifth-ranked Ohio State 18-9 while getting wins over Wayne State, Northwestern and North Carolina.

All three women's weapons had similar success, with the foil squad getting 39, the foil 38 wins and the epee 37. The epee led the men's team in victories with 34, with the foil adding 32 and the saber 29.

Up next in Sunday's competition will be Fairleigh Dickinson, Lawrence, Cleveland State, Northwestern, Temple, Detroit and UC San Diego for the women and Cleveland State, Detroit, UC San Diego, Caltech and Lawrence for the men.

Princeton will return home to host the Ivy League championship next Saturday and Sunday.
