Maya Lawrence '02, Susannah Scanlan '14 and Soren Thompson '05 will fence for Team USA at the Olympic Games this summer.
For the first time in school history, the Princeton fencing program will have three current or former competitors at the Olympic Games.

Maya Lawrence '02, Soren Thompson '05 and Susannah Scanlan '14, all epeeists, have qualified to represent Team USA in London this summer.

Princeton has had a fencer in 12 of the 19 Olympic Games since 1920. Twice, in 1920 and 2004, Princeton was represented by two fencers, but 2012 will mark the first time three Tigers fenced at the Games.

On the men's side, Thompson will compete individually, as there will be no team epee event at the 2012 Games. Lawrence and Scanlan will be able to compete in both the individual and team events.

Thompson and Air Force Academy alum Seth Kelsey will represent the United States in men's epee as the two allotted individuals, while Lawrence and Scanlan will represent two-thirds of the U.S. women's epee team. The pair will join Notre Dame alumna Courtney Hurley with Hurley's sister Kelley as an alternate.

The full U.S. team can be found here.

With no team competition for men's epee in the Olympic Games, the International Fencing Federation sponsored a World Championship in Kiev, Ukraine in mid-April. The Americans, with Thompson on the team, beat out 21 other nations for the first gold in U.S. men's senior epee history at the World Championships. In the elimination portion of the competition, the U.S. defeated Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Hungary and France in the final. Results from that competition can be found here.
