POTSDAM, N.Y. (3/7/13) - Senior Andrew Ammon scored the game-winning goal at 12:02 to give Princeton a 3-2 win over Clarkson in Game 1 of the ECAC First-Round Series.

The teams will meet again tomorrow in the best-of-three series tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

Ammon rifled a shot from the right point that went over the right shoulder of netminder Greg Lewis. Senior Andrew Calof and sophomore Jonathan Liau helped set up the play. (watch the goal)

"It was a real gusty team effort," Princeton head coach Bob Prier said. "I thought the winning goal was outstanding and Ammon deserved it. We do have some things to clean up before tomorrow but I like our effort tonight. It was a good win and we needed it. Hopefully this builds some confidence in our players and they can use that moving forward."

Princeton (6-24) took a 1-0 lead 4:19 into the game on a goal from sophomore Kyle Rankin. Freshman Ben Foster got possession in the defensive end and flipped it up the right boards. Liau got his stick on it at the checkered red and fired a shot on Lewis. The rebound came out to Rankin who was streaking up the right side and he popped the puck into an opening between the left pipe and Lewis. The Tigers were the only lower seed to hold a lead tonight in the ECAC.

The Knights tied it up at 3:08 of the second period with a power-play goal. Will Frederick went five hole from the right slot after getting the puck from Ben Sexton near the end boards. After Clarkson went 3 for 6 on the power play in last week’s match-up, it went 1 for 5 tonight.

Clarkson (18-15-4) gained its only lead of the game with a goal with 9.1 seconds left in the second period. Pat Megannety redirected a shot by Alex Boak from the right point that squeaked through traffic.

Calof knotted the game at 2-2 with a power play tally at 6:15 of the third. Senior Alec Rush, positioned at the left point, slid the puck down the ice to sophomore Mike Ambrosia in the left circle. With Lewis moving to cut off his angle, Ambrosia faked a shot and instead passed to Calof who was open on the weak side for the goal.

Freshman Colton Phinney made 39 saves in goal, including 10 in the overtime, to snap Princeton’s five-game winless skid to Clarkson.

This is the second game this season that Princeton has trailed in the second intermission and came back to win. Princeton defeated then No. 4 Quinnipiac 4-3 in November after trailing 2-1 at second intermission.

The only other time Princeton and Clarkson played an overtime playoff game was in 1998 when the Tigers won the ECAC Championship game 5-4 in double overtime.

Princeton is 3-0 in overtime games this season and the only upset win of the ECAC playoffs tonight.
