A two-out three-run third inning was enough to lift Seton Hall past the Princeton baseball team Wednesday evening in non-conference action. The Pirates added insurance runs down the stretch to shutout the Tigers 5-0.

Princeton’s offense struggled to get going, as Seton Hall held a 10-3 hit differential and its pitchers tallied four 1-2-3 innings.

Turning Point of the Game: Starting pitcher Tyler Foote struck out the first two batters in the third, but a bunt single would open up Seton Hall’s offensive burst. Foote and the Tigers were unable to get the final out before letting the next three batters on, giving up an RBI double and a two-run single. The Pirates scored three runs on four hits to hold a 3-0 lead.

Unable to Capitalize: Princeton loaded the bases twice, but was unable capitalize on its offensive chances. In the top of the fifth Andres Larramendii hit a two-out double and the Tigers next two batters reached on walks. In its first chance to score since the first when Alex Flink was called out at home, Princeton was unable to advance the runners before conceding the final out.

The Tigers final offensive opportunity was in the eighth, as the squad loaded the bases with one out. The next two batters were struck out and hit into a fielder’s choice, respectively to close out the inning.

Player of the Game: Freshman Larramendi earned his second start, going all nine innings behind the plate. He hit his first career double in the fifth inning and finished the day with six putouts.

Pitcher of the Game: Rookie Luke Strieber made his fifth appearance of the season, tossing two scoreless innings. He allowed only one hit and two walks in nine batters faced. Strieber came in in the bottom of the fifth and quickly found himself in a bases loaded jam. After striking out the leadoff batter and forcing a groundout, the Pirates next three batters would reach. Strieber closed out the inning with a groundout to second.

On Deck: The Tigers (5-18, 3-1 Ivy) hit the road for their first Ivy road trip of the year this weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard. Princeton plays the Big Green on Saturday, Apr. 6 in doubleheader action, followed by a twinbill the next day versus the Crimson. First pitch is set for 12 noon both days.
