BETHLEHEM, Pa. (10/6/13) – The Princeton men’s cross country won the Paul Short Invitational Brown Race in a wild day at Lehigh University. It was the final race of the day before the meet was cancelled by the county.
The Tigers collected a team score of 94, 39 points better than second-place Albany at 133. The team averaged a 25:49 in the 8k race.
Junior Connor Martin toppled over the finish line to edge out Albany’s Christopher Buchanan. Senior Michael Williams took ninth place at 25:40 and junior Eddie Owens was six seconds back at 25:46 for 13th. Jack Leahy was the top freshman running 26:03 for 29th and senior Bradley Paternostro was 41st at 26:19. Sophomore Brett Kelly clocked a 26:45 while senior Garrett Rowe ran a 27:25.
Temperatures soared into the 90s and many of the runners were affected by heat-related illnesses. After this race the meet was called by the Lehigh and Northhampton county EMS.
"We along with many other towns in the county have outdoor events going on in the heat today," Lehigh Director of Facilities Greg Schulze said. "Due to the weather, the emergency services have been overwhelmed and spread thin. It is in the best interest of the athletes to shut down the event."
Princeton will compete in two meets again next weekend. The top group will head to Terre Haute for the Pre-Nationals while the rest of the team stays back in Princeton to host the Princeton Invitational on West Windsor Fields.
