Squash Battles Past Yale Again, Claims Third To Cap Ivy Championship Season
Princeton, whose one-year reign as national champion ended Sunday when top-seeded Trinity reclaimed the crown with a 6-3 victory over Harvard, showed the type of resolve Sunday that helped the Tigers win their second straight Ivy title. Despite trailing in three of the matches it ultimately won, Princeton raised its winning streak over Yale to three with the Sunday win.
Princeton led 2-1 after the opening shift, which began with a 3-0 victory for sophomore Tyler Osborne at the No. 3 position. Yale won 3-0 at the six spot, but freshman Michael LeBlanc overcame an early 1-0 deficit to sprint past Joseph Roberts at the ninth spot.
The second shift was one of the most exciting shifts of the season for Princeton, as each of the three matches went the distance. Yale took two of the three, including a 13-11 win for Charlie Wyatt over David Hoffman at the No. 8 spot. Sam Fenwick defeated Princeton co-captain Steve Harrington, who rallied out of a 2-0 deficit, 11-8 in the fifth to earn Yale its third win, but Tiger sophomore Samuel Kang dominated his final game 11-3 to defeat Hywel Robinson at No. 2.
With the match even at 3-3, Princeton swept the final shift to clinch third place. Senior Todd Harrity, one day after his impressive 3-1 victory over 2012 national champion Ali Farag, defeated Kenneth Chan in three games, while freshman Vivek Dinodia also defeated Eric Caine in three games at No. 7.
Junior Dylan Ward, who played a five-game marathon Saturday, came back Sunday and played five more before taking out Neil Martin 11-9 in the fifth to clinch the 6-3 win.
The national individual championships for both the men's and women's teams will be next weekend at Trinity. Check back with GoPrincetonTigers.com later this week for full previews.
