Relay Sweep, Individual Wins Extend Men's Swim/Dive Lead At Brown Invite

Wins by senior Stevie Vines and freshman En-Wei Hu-Van Wright, as well as another relay sweep, has helped the four-time reigning Ivy League champion Princeton men's swimming and diving team to a substantial lead after two days of the Brown Invitational.

Princeton will enter Sunday's final day of competition with 704 points, while second-place Dartmouth has 548 points. Army is pushing Dartmouth with 533.5 points, while Brown (345.5) and Columbia (339.5) are vying for fourth.

Princeton took two of the top three spots in the 400 medley relay, including a victory by the quartet of Kaspar Raigla, Jack Pohlmann, Brooks Powell and Harrison Wagner (1:28.80). The Tiger 'B' squad of Michael Strand, Teo D'Alessandro, Marco Bove and Jeremy Wong added a third-place finish in 1:28.80.

Both Oliver Bennett and Daniel Hasler posted top-four times in the 400 IM to open the individual events Saturday evening. Bennett took third in 4:00.51, while Hasler finished fourth in 4:00.66. Caleb Tuten also reached the 'A' final, and he took eighth in 4:03.43.

Princeton placed two 'A' finalists in the 100 fly, and Raigla led the Tiger duo with a seventh-place finish in 50.16. Bove went 50.48 to take eighth, while Brooks Powell hit a lifetime best 48.97 to win the 'B' final.

Wong, part of the fifth-ranked Princeton freshman class this season, had an exciting showdown with Brown's Tommy Glenn in the 200 free final. The host pulled off the win in 1:37.29, but Wong showed he would be a force in the event with a B-cut time of 1:37.93. Teammate Michael Hauss finished third in 1:39.03, while freshman Sandy Bole took sixth in 1:40.06.

Princeton had three in the 100 breast final, and freshman Byron Sanborn led the trio with a second-place finish in 56.19. Pohlmann placed fifth in 56.96, while Hasler ended up eighth in 57.93.

Hu-Van Wright picked up Princeton's only individual swimming victory of the evening by taking the 100 back in 48.20, a time that currently stands as the fastest in the league this season. Raigla followed with a third-place finish in 50.29, while Andrew Helber placed sixth in 51.10.

On the diving side, senior Stevie Vines won the 3-meter competition with 384.15 points. His total was more than 25 points higher than anybody in the field, and nearly 60 points higher than his closest Ivy League rival.

The Tigers remained the class of the relay field by going 1-2 in the 800 free relay to end Saturday's competition. The quartet of D'Alessandro, Hauss, Bove and Wong won the event in 6:35.58, while the foursome of Hu-Van Wright, Lawley, Jager and Bole took second in 6:41.95.

Princeton will conclude the Brown Invitational Sunday, with preliminaries starting at 10 am and finals starting at 5 pm.
