Women's Hockey Falls to St. Lawrence, 6-2
PRINCETON, N.J. (11/16/12) - The St. Lawrence women's hockey team stays unbeaten in league play as the Saints defeated Princeton 6-2 on Friday, Nov. 16 at Hobey Baker Rink, in the Tigers' first of seven straight home games.
Abbey McRae of St. Lawrence scored the first goal of the game six minutes with Amanda Boulier and Brooke Fernandez assisting.
The Tigers set up in power-play formation and capitalized on their first power-play opportunity. Freshman Molly Contini tallied her second career goal with help from seniors Corey Stearns and Alex Kinney.
Princeton's boost of confidence was taken down a peg as the Saints responded with a goal just nine seconds later. Jenna Marks would get the goal and would add her second three minutes later to give St. Lawrence at 3-1 lead at the end of the first period.
The Tigers' aggressive offense fell short to the Saints defense in the second period, as Princeton outshot St. Lawrence 12-10. Sophomore Brianna Leahy had some quality chances at the goal and the Tigers got a second power-play opportunity, but the Saints defense held strong.
Jacqueline Wand expanded St. Lawrence's lead to 4-1 with a goal in the seventh minute of the third period.
Senior Kelly Cooke took advantage of another Tiger power play and put the puck past netminder Carmen MacDonald from the right side to make the score 4-2.
Once again the Saints responded with a goal within seconds with a slap shot from Fernandez giving St. Lawrence a 5-2 lead.
After assisting on three of her team's goals, Boulier scored a goal of her own with less than six minutes to go.
Freshman Kimberly Newell had a total of 25 saves in 53:57 minutes of play. Sophomore Ashley Holt was in the Princeton net for the last five minutes of the game but did not have to make a save.
