After 62 scoreless minutes No. 3 UConn managed to convert on a penalty corner to hand the No. 10 Princeton field hockey team a 1-0 loss Sunday in Storrs, Conn. The loss marks the third of the year for the Tigers, all to ranked opponents, dropping them to 5-3, 2-0 Ivy on the season.

Princeton had its best offensive opportunities in the first half, putting together a string of three consecutive shots between the 22nd and 25th minutes. Cat Caro opened the attack with a shot that went wide, followed by an Allison Evans attempt that would be saved by Connecticut’s goalie Sarah Mansfield.

At 24:03, Julia Reinprecht sent in Princeton’s first corner, but Teresa Benvenuti’s shot would connect directly with Mansfield to swat it out.

Princeton finished with nine shots and six corners.

Sophomore goalkeeper Anya Gersoff and the Princeton backline showed a lot of cohesion for much of the match, shielding the cage from all but one of UConn’s 16 shots, including eight on frame.

The Huskies (8-0) took control in the Tiger circle with 14 to play in regulation, peppering in eight consecutive shots, four of which on target. Despite the Princeton defense’s best effort, it was unable to clear the ball out and on UConn’s ninth try it connected on a Marie Elena Bolles tip in at 62:20.

Princeton looks to bounce back into the win column when it resumes Ivy play at home versus Columbia on Friday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. at Bedford Field.
