Game 2: Princeton vs. Army

Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013
Roberts Stadium • Princeton

Box Score

5:59: Princeton's Lauren Lazo scored on an assist from Melissa Downey

32:11: Princeton's Tyler Lussi scored with assists from Gabrielle Ragazzo and Kacie Kergides

58:12: Princeton's Tyler Lussi scored with assists from Jessica Haley and Erika Hoglund

Princeton's defense helped keep the pressure off Darcy Hargadon in goal, as she recorded saves on both of Army's two shots on goal. Princeton allowed only three shots on goal over the two-game weekend.

While already leading 2-0, the Tigers used a nice defensive play to put the game away. Erika Hoglund took the ball away from an Army player in the midfield and chipped it to Jessica Haley, who found a charging Tyler Lussi to make it 3-0 in the 59th minute.

• After each scored one goal in Friday night's game, Tyler Lussi and Lauren Lazo combined again to beat Army.

• Princeton trimmed the deficit in the series with Army to 4-3. The teams last played in 1997 at Princeton, also the last time a team in the Patriot League at the time of the game beat the Tiger women's soccer team in Princeton.

• Princeton is 2-0 for the first time since 2004, when the Tigers started 4-0.

• Princeton is now 15-0-2 on campus since that 1997 loss to Army against foes in the Patriot League at the time of the game.

• After getting their first opening-game shutout since 2001 on Friday night, the Tigers made it back-to-back zeroes allowed to start the season, also the first time since 2001. That year's team shut out its first five opponents.

• Princeton has scored five goals over the first two games in each of the last two seasons. Last season, the Tigers opened with eight goals over the first three games.

• The start in goal was just the third of her career for Darcy Hargadon, who started and played all 110 minutes of a tie against Lafayette in her rookie season of 2011 as well as all 90 in Friday night's game. It was also her third complete game in goal.

• The two-goal spread represented the largest margin of victory in a season-opening win for Princeton since 2003, when the Tigers beat American 4-1.

• Tyler Lussi, who became the first freshman since Diana Matheson '08 in 2004 to score in a season opener on Friday night, made it back-to-back games with a goal. Matheson was also the last freshman to do that.

Princeton is 8-2 all-time against Seton Hall, which the Tigers will play Thursday at 7 p.m. on the road. The teams met last in 2011 in South Orange, a 2-1 double-overtime win for the Pirates.
