Women's Lax Clinches Ivy Tournament Bid with 11-9 Win Over Harvard

PRINCETON, N.J. (4/13/13) - The Princeton women's lacrosse team has clinched a spot in the 2013 Ivy League Tournament with an 11-9 win over Harvard on Saturday, April 13 at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. The No. 16-ranked Tigers improve to 8-4 overall and 5-0 in the league.

Junior Mary-Kate Sivilli paced the Tigers with a four-point game on three goals and an assist. Senior Sam Ellis had a hat trick and sophomore Erin McMunn scored twice and added an assist. Junior goalie Caroline Franke made 10 saves in her seventh win of the season.

Ten of the game's 20 games were scored on free-position attempts. Princeton converted 7-of-9, while Harvard was 3-for-4.

Only two goals in the first half were scored in classic style, with six coming by way of the eight meter.

Harvard ran a slow-paced offense and started to run time off the clock as soon as it won the opening draw. Princeton struggled to get possession and found itself taking 24 fouls as the Tigers tried to pressure the Crimson offense.

Princeton had a 3-1 lead 13 minutes into the game, before a three-goal run gave Harvard its first lead of the game, 4-3 with 3:35 to play in the half. Ellis tied the game with 1:24 remaining.

Sivilli scored twice to start the second half to regain the lead for Princeton, 6-4. Two goals by Harvard in the next six minutes tied the game once again at 6-6.

The Tigers scored four unanswered, with goals by Ellis, Sivilli, McMunn and freshman Anya Gersoff, to grab their largest lead of the game, 10-6, at 7:42.

The teams traded goals within three minutes of each other as Princeton maintained a four-goal lead, 11-7 with 4:09 left.

Harvard scored twice in the final 2:12 but it wasn't enough as Princeton hung on for the win.

Micaela Cyr led the Crimson with three goals and one assist, while Danielle Tetrault had two goals and one assist and four draw controls. Kyleigh Keating had a game-high five draw controls. Goalie Melanie Cook made four saves in 60 minutes. Harvard drops to 2-9 on the season and 1-4 in league play.

Harvard had a 22-21 edge in shots and won 15 of 22 draw controls. Princeton had a 6-2 advantage in ground balls, while turnovers were limited with three for Harvard and two for Princeton.

Princeton will face Penn in a battle between the two Ivy League unbeatenss on Wednesday night, April 17 at 7 p.m., at Franklin Field.
