No. 4 Cornell Outlasts Princeton in Women's Hockey, 4-1

PRINCETON, NJ (2/9/13) - The No. 4-ranked Cornell women's hockey team proved too much as Princeton fell 4-1 on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Hobey Baker Rink.

The Tigers held their own with the Big Red through the first two periods, but Cornell scored three unanswered in the third.

Cornell took a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 9:31 of the first period. Erin Barley-Maloney received a pass from Brianne Jenner in the slot and quickly steered the puck to the right side of netminder Kimberly Newell and into the back of the net.

Newell kept the Tigers alive with 29 saves in the first two periods, as Cornell outshot Princeton 30-13 in the first 40 minutes.

Less than two minutes into the third period the Tigers evened the game with a goal by freshman Cristin Shanahan. Junior Gabie Figueroa skated down the right side and fed Shanahan who was on the doorstep for the goal.

Jessica Campbell tallied the go-ahead goal at 8:34 and Lauriana Rougeau pushed Cornell's lead to 3-1 with a goal off a rebound with 1:41 to play.

Princeton pull Newell for the extra attacker with 45 seconds remaining but the the Big Red gained control of the puck and Jenner sailed the puck into the empty net to seal the win with 29 seconds left on the clock.

Newell finished the game with 42 saves, the fifth time this season she has made 40+ saves. Cornell goalie Lauren Slebodnick stopped 14 shots to lift her team to 20-5 overall and 15-3 in league play.

The Tigers are now 9-14-2 overall and 4-12-2 in the ECAC, sitting in ninth place in the standings. Princeton is just two points out of a playoff position. Princeton will have to pick up points on the road as the finish out the regular season on the road. First up the Tigers face Clarkson and St. Lawrence on Feb. 15 & 16, followed by Brown & Yale on Feb. 22 & 23.
