Box Score & Play-by-Play

Princeton made three early errors that helped Rutgers to a three-run lead, but the Tiger bats overcame it as the afternoon wore on as Princeton rallied to defeat the Scarlet Knights for the first time since 2009, 5-3.

Rutgers held a 3-0 lead in the middle of the second inning with only one of the three runs earned to Princeton starter Claire Klausner, and the Tigers managed just three baserunners over the first three frames.

Beginning in the fourth inning, Princeton started clicking against Rutgers starter Shayla Sweeney, with Emily Viggers hitting her first home run to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth. The real breakthrough came in the fifth, when Princeton had four hits from the first five batters of the fifth inning, capped by a two-run double from Libby Crowe, to take a 4-3 lead.

Against Rutgers reliever Dresden Maddox, Princeton tacked on another run when Marissa Reynolds started the inning with a double and freshman classmate Haley Hineman singled her home to make it 5-3.

While Klausner threw the first four innings and kept Rutgers off the board after the second, Erica Nori came in for the fifth and got the win, while Shanna Christian came in for the seventh to get the save.

Emily Viggers hit her first home run of the season as part of a 2 for 2 day. The fourth-inning home run got the zero off the scoreboard for the Tigers and sparked the team's rally at the plate.

Libby Crowe's fifth-inning double put Princeton ahead 4-3 in the fifth inning and it came as the fourth hit in the space of five batters in the frame. The Tigers entered the inning down 3-1 but saw singles from Danielle Allen and Haley Hineman to set the table for an RBI-double from Cara Worden to cut the gap to 3-2. Crowe's double brought home Hineman and Worden to put the Tigers in front.

• Rutgers had won the last four games in the series before today. The teams split a twinbill in 2009 and saw a Rutgers sweep in its last visit to '95 Field in 2010. When the series resumed last season, the Scarlet Knights won a single game in Piscataway.

• Sophomore Emily Viggers' home run was her first since March 16, 2013 and was the third of her Tiger career.

• Shanna Christian's save was the first of the sophomore's career and the third for the Princeton staff this season. Of the team's four arms, three have saves, with Christian joining freshmen Erica Nori and Claire Klausner.

• Princeton's 13 hits were a season-high total and gave the Tigers a double-digit hit total for the third straight game, the longest stretch of the season. The last time Princeton had as many as 13 hits in a game was in the 2013 season finale against Cornell, when the Tigers had 15.

• Libby Crowe's two-RBI game was the first multi-RBI game of the junior's career.

• Freshman Haley Hineman is 8 for 10 with six RBIs in the last three games.

• Nine Tigers split the team's 13 hits, with Skye Jerpbak and Emily Viggers co-leading the team with two apiece.

• Freshman Marissa Reynolds has a hit in three straight games, tying her season-best streak.

Princeton will return to league play at Columbia Saturday and Sunday for a four-game series with a doubleheader each day starting at 12:30 p.m.
