No. 11 Field Hockey Extends Ivy Win Streak to 16, Shuts Out Columbia 5-0

The 11th-ranked Princeton field hockey team capitalized early and often in the first half, earning a lopsided 5-0 shutout victory over Columbia Friday evening at Bedford Field. The win extended Tigers’ all-time record versus the Lions to 17-0 and their Ivy League winning streak to 16 consecutive victories.

Princeton (6-3, 3-0 Ivy) will look to carry the momentum of Friday’s win into its five-game road swing, beginning at current No. 1 Maryland on Friday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.

Princeton outshot Columbia 31-4, including 20 on frame, and tallied a 9-1 penalty corner differential.

Cassidy Arner scored her first two goals of the year, striking 24 seconds into the match with the game-winner. She received a long aerial pass from Amanda Bird, weaved through some traffic and shot in straight on.

Sandwiched between Arner’s pair of goals, freshman Cat Caro scored her first career goal in the 7th minute. She picked up an Allison Evans deflection to put Princeton up 2-0.

Arner connected again in the 23rd minute, receiving a pass near the baseline on the left side.

Princeton’s offensive firepower was relentless as the first half progressed, with Evans scoring the final pair of goals in the 24th and 31st minute.

Goalkeeper Anya Gersoff earned her fourth win of the year, making two stops in her 35 minutes of work. Christina Maida contributed to Princeton’s second shutout of the year and in as many Ivy games with two saves in the second half.

Despite not finding the back of the net in the second half, the Tigers continued to serve as the constant aggressors and managed possession and control through regulation.
