Opening its 2013 season and the head coaching tenure of Lisa Sweeney, the Princeton softball team split their first day at the North Florida Osprey Invitational in Jacksonville.

The Tigers opened with a 10-2 win over St. Bonaventure before outhitting North Florida but losing to the Ospreys 2-0.

Against St. Bonaventure, Princeton used a starting lineup that consisted of all returners except for left field, where freshman Danielle Allen got the start. Four players had multi-hit games, with Alyssa Schmidt's 3-for-4 leading the team.

Liza Kuhn picked up the win in the circle, giving up eight hits and walking a pair but stranding nine runners while striking out eight.

Princeton got on the board in a big way in the top of the first with an Alex Peyton two-run shot, though St. Bonaventure pulled within 2-1 in the bottom of the frame.

The Tigers made it 6-1 in the fourth with RBIs coming from Sarah McGowan, from Candy Button on a two-run double and a Cara Worden sacrifice fly. St. Bonaventure got one back in its half of the fourth, but the Bonnies were held scoreless from there.

Lizzy Pierce and McGowan each popped two-run home runs in the seventh, making the 10-2 margin.

While Princeton (1-0) sent St. Bonaventure to 1-13 with the loss, the Tigers came up just short against a North Florida (15-4) team that, with the win, has taken seven games in a row.

North Florida benefited from a fielding error to start the second inning and tripled that runner home to take a 1-0 lead. Princeton had hits in every inning but one, the second, and left eight runners in scoring position.

Peyton took the loss in the circle, giving up seven hits and a walk, striking out two. Maddie Cousens went 3 for 3 in the nightcap, with Nikki Chu going 2 for 3.

Princeton will return to the North Florida campus for a 10 a.m. game against Delaware State. Based on how the round-robin in the four-team tournament goals, the Tigers will learn their tournament semifinal opponent for a game later in the afternoon.
