Men's Track 7th at Sykes & Sabock; Franklin 2nd at Armory Meet

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (2/2/13) - The Princeton track & field team finished seventh at Penn State's Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday, Feb. 2.

The team scored 43 points in the 12-team meet.

Junior Tom Hopkins was the runner up in the 400. He ran 47.58, faster than 29 other competitors.  Hopkins made up one leg of the Tigers' 4x400 relay that placed third. He along with sophomores Tom Scott and Bradley Paternostro, and senior Austin Hollimon clocked a 3:16.32. Hollimon, who competed in the US Olympic Trials this summer, scored in the 600 as he ran 1:21.26 to finish in seventh place.

The Tigers got nine points in the 800 as they placed 5-6-7. Senior Peter Callahan was the first across at 1:51.35 and was followed by junior Michael Williams at 1:51.41 and senior Russell Dinkins at 1:52.25.

Dinkins was on the DMR that was third as well. He was joined on the relay by junior Tyler Udland ,and freshmen Sam Berger and Brian Poirier.

Another third-place finish belonged to freshman Brett Kelly in the 3000. Kelly clocked an 8:28.42 in the event.

Senior Michael Palmisano scored in the mile with a time of 4:06.80. It marked a PR for Palmisano as he shaved nearly six seconds off his previous best time. Incidentally, it was a Tiger than won the event. Princeton alum Mark Amirault '11 ran 4:03.40 as he finishes his eligibility and earns a master's at Virginia.

In the field events, junior David Coneway was a scorer in the pole vault. Coneway cleared 4.65 (15-3) for the points.

The Tigers took a break at Sykes & Sabock to watch teammate senior Michael Franklin run the 3000 at the Armory Collegiate as it was webstreamed online. Franklin finished second in the race with a PR of 8:04.59 behind Henry Lelei of Texas A&M, who finished fifth at the NCAA Cross Country Championship this year.

Princeton will split off again next weekend as they compete at the Husky Invitational and host HYP on Saturday, Feb. 9.
