Penn State Avenges Earlier Loss, Sweeps Men's Volleyball In EIVA Return

Release: 03/28/2014

The Princeton men's volleyball team returned to EIVA play Friday night in the home of the 15-time defending champion, and Penn State established itself as the team to beat once again. Penn State avenged a five-set loss in Princeton last month with a 3-0 win over the Tigers Friday night.

The loss all but ends Princeton's hopes to host the EIVA Championships at the end of April. Both Penn State and Harvard will own a two-team tiebreak over Princeton, and the Tigers would lose a three-team tiebreaker between the trio.

That being said, Princeton would also go into the EIVA playoffs with the knowledge that it can go toe to toe with both teams. Besides Princeton's 3-2 win over Penn State in front of 1,565 in Dillon Gym, the Tigers have also had a pair of close losses to Harvard, both of which went deep into the fifth set.

While those were close matchups, Friday's showdown at Rec Hall didn't quite fit that category. Penn State held Princeton to a .112 hitting percentage in a 25-19, 25-13, 25-20 win. Junior Cody Kessel had a team-high eight kills, while junior Pat Schwagler added seven; the middle duo of Will Siroky and Junior Oboh combined for nine kills and only one error, while senior tri-captain Davis Waddell had 24 assists.

Princeton will continue EIVA play Saturday afternoon against Saint Francis, which dropped a five-set thriller to George Mason Friday night.
