INTERVIEW WITH LORI DAUPHINY

The Princeton open women won three gold medals at the inaugural Ivy League Sprints, and that was enough to help the Tigers win the Willing Point Team Title. Radcliffe, however, upset the Tiger varsity eight to win the 2012 Ivy League title.

Princeton grabbed gold in the second varsity eight, third varsity eight and third varsity four, and it placed at least third in each of the other three championship finals. The consistently high finishes helped Princeton score 76 team points, three more than Radcliffe, to win the Willing Point Title.

While the NCAA Championship is determined in a team format (V8, 2V8, V4), the Ivy League title goes to the winner of the varsity eight race. Princeton was the only undefeated varsity eight during the regular season, but Radcliffe came on strong Sunday on Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J., and won its first Ivy League title since 2003.

Radcliffe won in 6:17.74, while Cornell placed second in 6:20.53. Princeton, which defeated both of those boats on April 7 on the Bud Smith Memorial Race Course, finished third in 6:22.06. The Tigers had to fight hard just to reach the medal stand, as Yale finished fourth in 6:22.16.

The second varsity eight, which also went undefeated during the regular season, won its second straight gold medal with a time of 6:27.95. That time topped Brown by more than three seconds for the gold. The third varsity eight also won its second straight gold in 6:38.49, which was more than 10 seconds faster than Brown.

The Princeton varsity four had been undefeated during the regular season, but Radcliffe came up with another big race to take gold. The Crimson four won in 7:07.08, while Princeton finished second in 7:09.56. The Tigers placed second by nearly two full seconds over Yale.

The second varsity four placed third in 7:23.35, while the third varsity four won gold in 8:02.47.

Princeton will send its varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four to nearby Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., for the 2012 NCAA Championships in two weeks. The last time the NCAAs were held at Mercer Lake, Princeton won gold in the varsity eight.
